Prototype
Nespresso + Nestlé
Add one step to someone’s morning coffee and they’re gone. We added none.
The brief reached us as three words: loyalty, sustainability, subscription. The room was Nestlé’s Silicon Valley innovation outpost, Nespresso Italy, and a leadership team that included the CEO, across a four-day design-thinking workshop and a three-month engagement.
The challenge
Nobody reads a manual to make coffee, and nobody forgives a new step in their morning. Whatever we came up with had to earn its place in a ritual people already love, without asking them to do anything.
What shaped it
- Motivation before features. Consumer research in the Italian market — why people stay, what loyalty means to someone who drinks coffee every day.
- How might we, with discipline. Questions framed tightly enough to focus innovation managers from two continents.
- A needs framework. Loyalty, sustainability and subscription turned into things you can design against.
- Prototype to test, not to admire. A clickable mobile prototype — the survey flow, the purchase journey, out-of-box setup — built to validate concepts with real customers.
- Recycling in the ritual. Built into the flow, not bolted on at the end.
What we did
Facilitated the UX work in the workshop, then designed the prototype with the senior product group and SVIO leads: low-fidelity first, then branded high-fidelity screens that went into Nespresso’s app for alpha and beta.
The testing fed updates to Nespresso’s digital properties. We were paid partly in espresso, and came home with a free Nespresso machine for the office. Not a complaint. All worth it.
